What is the TEF?
The Test d'Évaluation de Français (TEF) is an official French-language proficiency test designed by Le Français des Affaires (CCI Paris Île-de-France). It is recognised by the French Ministry of the Interior and by the Canadian authorities (IRCC).
It assesses four skills: reading, listening, writing and speaking. Each skill receives a score mapped to the CEFR levels (A1 to C2).
Several versions of the TEF exist depending on your purpose. In Nantes, Jobs Around runs the TEF IRN and the TEF Canada.

TEF Integration, Residence and Nationality
For your administrative procedures in France:
- Multi-year residence permit (level A2 required)
- Resident card (level B1 required)
- French nationality by naturalisation (level B2 required)
Test components
Listening, reading, speaking, writing. Computer-based, all components on the same day. Depending on your procedure, only some components may be needed: check the requirements of your application.

On exam day
Arrive 15 minutes before the session with a valid official ID (passport, residence permit, identity card). No documents, phones or dictionaries are allowed during the test.

Frequently asked questions.
Which level do I need on the TEF IRN?
It depends on your procedure: A2 for the multi-year residence permit, B1 for the resident card, B2 for French nationality. These levels are set by French regulations in force since 1 January 2026; always check the requirement stated in your application.
How long are the results valid?
TEF IRN and TEF Canada certificates are valid for 2 years from the exam date.
When and how do I get my results?
Results are published by Le Français des Affaires in your online candidate account, in practice within a few days. The official certificate is then available for download.
Can my employer or an organisation pay for the exam?
Yes. Registration is online and the fee can be covered by your employer or as part of a training programme (OPCO, France Travail). For a group of employees, contact us: we can open a dedicated session.
Can I retake the TEF?
Yes, with no limit on attempts. You only need to wait 30 days between two sittings of the same version of the test. You may also retake only the components whose score you want to improve.
